I signed up for the beta of this new service on the request of its founder Campbell Scott after hearing him give a presentation on it in Leitrim recently. At the begining I had some teething problems with it but its since come into its own and is now the networking site I use most, over and above the cumbersome and time wasting Facebooks, Bebo’s, etc.. 8 Web Apps for Businesses
I’d like to list some applications/software that I think is essential for any business that takes the web seriously as a marketing tool and sales lead generator. I will presume that all businesses have a web site first and foremost, if not, why not, it’s 2009 and we’re in a recessionary period folks – don’t you want sales!? Living and Working in Leitrim
Myself and my partner moved to Leitrim from Dublin (Kimmage & Tallaght) in August 2003. She used to live there briefly as a child and her family have been coming boating on the Shannon for years. We were helping her father find a house to buy and we spotted a very nice one for him lakeside in Jamestown, a cute little village 2/3 miles from the epicenter of Leitrim, Carrick-on-Shannon. Aldi and Lidl Cynical Adds!
It never ceases to amaze me how well the Lidl and Aldi email newsletters and store promotions match the seasons or current events. The latest products from both stores are all completely health and fitness related designed to cash in on our post Christmas pig out guilt! Its either way cynical or marketing genius, most likely both!
iTrackmine Stuff Swapping!
For anyone who got a ton of crap for Xmas and wants to get rid of it or swap for something more useful (like my Johnathan Ross audio book for a copy of Web Designer Mag!) then check out www.itrackmine.com – a site where you can list a collection of your stuff and network with others to see if you can swap stuff with them. Looks useful.
Online Charity Donations
Just a quick word re Online Charitable Donations which are big these days. If you’re feeling a bit guilty about over spending at Christmas, unlikely as that might be in the current climate, then off load some guilt by signing up at http://www.mycharity.ie and making a credit card donation to the charity of your choice. Its something I like to do every Christmas but this year especially. The site allows you to easily browse charities and read up on what they do before you make your donation and theres a category for all whether you want to help the Elderly, Animals or people with disabilities.

Recession Boosts Cyber Crime
Another nasty spin off from our current financial apocalypse is the increase in Cyber Crime including Viruses, Phishing and Email Scams. With people more desperate for a deal or a quick buck, scammers have more chance of catching out someone so be extra cautious.
I’ve definitely noticed a change in direction of most of my email spam. Gone are the Viagra offers and in come ‘Easy Mortgages’ and ‘Credit’.The same golden rule exists now as always, “If its too good to be true then its just that”

Shopping in the North
Just been reading localnewspaper the Leitrim Observer and soon as I opened it, out fell a brochure from the northern ireland tourist board extolling the virtues of travelling north this Christmas. I also noticed a few adds inside the paper from northern irish business including liquor stores! Continue reading Shopping in the North
3 Wins National Broadband Scheme Tender
Was a bit shocked to hear about this today untill I learned that the National Broadband Scheme seems to mainly exist to provide broadband to rural areas. Eircom might have been the favorite but they’ve already demonstrated they can’t serve rural communities. Only trouble with 3 is their customer service which nearly drove me mad the last time I was with them. Their support is completely outsourced to somewhere in India and unless they get their act together then I’m still not hopeful. Oh and at the minute I can’t get a 3 signal here either but maybe that will change..
